BBC Proms Ravel Concerto in G, August 22, 2002, with Abbado and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
Classical Music on the Web - Reviewed by March Bridle
"Martha Argerich’s playing of Ravel’s G major concerto was fabulous, and no more so than in an exceptional reading of the Adagio assai which was underpinned by a ravishing intimacy. Dynamically, her playing had a spectrum of colour and clarity which dazzled, and the sheer magnetism of the opening solo line had such magical beauty it proved genuinely hypnotic. If at times her playing can be cool in this work here it came across as intensely atmospheric and the contrast between the work’s central beauty and its outer virility were beautifully captured. The orchestra accompanied her superlatively – with exquisite woodwind shrieking like birds in the outer movements and the strings offering an opulent backdrop."

1.  "Argerich Makes a Sizzing Return" - Review by Matthew Rye for The Telegraph (UK).
2.  From The Guardian (UK) - Reviewed by Andrew Clements:
"The work has always been a staple of her small repertoire, and she has performed it in London before. But that familiarity in no way undermines the brilliance and volatility of her playing, in which every detail has a meaningful shape, every fistful of notes a perfectly honed purpose. Dutoit (Argerich's ex-husband) accompanied with intense concentration - well aware, perhaps, that anything could happen, but that it was bound to be electrifying."

"After the Schumann piano concerto with Martha Argerich, the entire building, not a seat spare, lifts off the ground with rapture. During the concert some 5,000 people, not to mention the far bigger television and radio audience, have come a few steps nearer bliss."
5.  Joshua Kosman - 9/1, for The San Francisco Chronicle

"... a luminous account of the Schumann concerto ... Argerich's playing of the Schumann, at once limpid and steely, was simply miraculous..."

Short video clip online, of the Schumann in Turin Sept. 5, in the online version of Turin September Music Magazine 2001     Thanks to Paolo Pettinato for the revised links. The video clip is blurry and choppy, to keep it a small size but it's charming and a good preview of Argerich's Schumann. The link does not always work, but with Internet Explorer, even when it doesn't, you can still right-click on the video link and "Save Target As" to save the very brief clip to your computer.
there's also a b&w photo taken September 5, 2000 at the Giovanni Agnelli Auditorium. The color ones didn't turn out as well.

Anyone who heard and liked the Proms performance should get the newly released (in the U.S.) CD of the live Dec.'79 performance with Kord conducting.  Excellent sound and extremely similar interpretation (see main page for that).
