These pieces represent the kinds of music I write: mostly conservatively classical, with occasional forays into jazz forms or experiments in sound. I use MIDI, entering notes onscreen (like composing on paper, but with the opportunity to hear the results as I write.)In addition to my own compositions, I am including some works by Baroque composers, and I will include arrangements of seasonal pieces for holidays. My pieces are quite diverse in spirit, genre and intent--- from formal and serious to lighthearted fun. I have had a joyous time making them!

I am a member of Classical Music Makers. A click on the lettering will take you to a compilation page of its members here on mp3.com.

But, first, I hope you will listen to these short pieces and find ones that you enjoy.

"Fantasy on the string lines of Grieg"genre: Chamber Music

I have always loved the momentum of Grieg's Holberg Suite Prelude. Using the lower string lines as a continuo, so to speak, I have composed a trio of woodwinds above them. The piece also uses motives from the suite's other movements in original but recognizable ways. Reinhold Behringer (Virtual Philharmonic Orchestra) has a gorgeous performance of the Grieg pieces, using the Garritan strings from Gigasampler, and I asked him to render my piece which he kindly and so masterfully has done.

A piece for string ensemble and woodwind quartet, inspired by the abundant birds and natural beauty of the locale near First Encounter Beach, where the Pilgrims settled on the Cape in Massachusetts. Bird calls weave into early American themes.Steve Layton kindly produced this rendering of the midi. His artistry has made the work sing! See the link to his own work on my links page.

The second, slow, movement of my Eastham Suite. The prelude expresses the night fears and uncertainty felt by the new arrivals as they grope for something comforting. They find it in recalling Thomas Tallis's hymn, "Glory be to Thee my God this night."

"Eastham Suite III: 1776"genre: Chamber Music
    view track infoview track info
The third movement of the Eastham Suite. Its themes reflect the time in history when farmers, fishermen and grinders of corn in townships all over Massachusetts went off to fight at places like Concord and Bunker Hill. The plaintive folksong, Buttermilk Hill, or "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" is heard in this piece. This is a new rendering 6/2001.

    "Home is the Sailor"genre: Symphonic
hi fi playhi fi play (broadband)
    downloaddownload (2.6 MB)
An improved recording by Mike Roberts of Home is the Sailor, Home from Sea. In this short orchestral work, I tried to create a sense of sailing....with key shifts as the voyager tacks serenely and steadily to harbor and I think Mike has captured that beautifully. The title is a line from Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, Requiem, and the piece was written for a dear person who loved poetry, good music, the sea...and me.

"Guy Fawkes Day Parade"genre: Other Holidays
A jolly little Baroque march I composed, with pipes and drumrolls to represent the fireworks. The basso continuo closely follows that in the first part of William Boyce's Symphony #1.

    "Bach's Siciliano (bwv.1032)"genre: Baroque
    view track infoview track info
Bach's work is for solo flute with harpsichord, but his counterpoint is so rich that I have always "heard" a third line in it for a second wind instrument. I have added no material here but rearranged melody lines to create a flute/oboe duet.
    Credits: Johann Sebastian Bach

"New Orleans Postcards: On the Road"genre: Mood Music
The first piece of seven in my electronic Suite: New Orleans Postcards.Traversing many eras of classical guitar-like styles, the suite's short pieces include this one as a Prelude, expressing happy anticipation over visiting the city where I grew up. It also includes a bluesy number (Sweet Olive Rag); a piece in antique classic Spanish guitar style (Spanish Moss); a "Fais-Do-Do" or Creole lullaby (Berceuse); a theme and variations(Streetcar); a formal anthem (Garden District Chorale); and an encore (Lagniappe). The pieces are not meant to be in any particular order: make your own playlist of those you fancy----and enjoy them!

"Spanish Moss (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: Electronic Classical
Part of the suite for two guitars, New Orleans Postcards. The architecture of the French Quarter really reflects the Spanish origins of the city and I wanted to include a piece in old classical Spanish guitar style, so here it is.

"Sweet Olive Rag (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: Traditional Jazz
For two guitars (midi realized). A rag with traces of the blues. Part of my guitar suite, New Orleans Postcards.

"Berceuse (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: World Traditions
A universal world tradition is rocking a baby to sleep. This instrumental cradle song, or "Fais-Do-Do" moves along as peacefully as poling a pirogue through the still waters of a Louisiana bayou.Part of the suite, New Orleans Postcards.
    MP3.com CD: Homecomings -

"Streetcar Ride (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: Electronic Classical
From New Orleans Postcards Suite.A theme and variations that moves along like the streetcars that go up St. Charles Avenue from Canal. Used to use a token that cost 1/7 of a penny when I was a child!
    MP3.com CD: Homecomings -

"Garden District (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: Electronic Classical
A short anthem or chorale befitting the Protestant roots of this faubourg of the city, which was its first suburb, and which is still magnificently endowed with large and gracious houses.
    MP3.com CD: Homecomings -

"Lagniappe (New Orleans Postcard)"genre: Electronic Classical
Lagniappe means an "extra" or a bonus (buy twelve eggs, and you get a thirteenth.)This is the last piece in my Suite for Two Guitars, New Orleans Postcards.

    "Patapan Christmas Medley"genre: Seasonal/Holiday
hi fi playhi fi play (broadband)
    downloaddownload (1.7 MB)
A medley of Patapan, Fum-Fum-Fum, and hints of the Carol of the Bells in an arrangement for funky little electronic pipes, whistles, guitar and little drum. The instruments are funky but the medley is full of classical counterpoint.
MP3.com CD: New Places, Old Times -

A celebration of the New Year! This short midi-realized work uses strings, timpani, church bell, organ and wordless choir.
